Track and field is known for running events, but there is more to it in the oval! Long jump is not a new Olympic event. In fact, it is part of the original ancient Greek pentathlon and is the only jumping event in these competitions. Since ancient games were used to train wars, it is assumed that the long jump simulates obstacles in the enemy's terrain.
The hopper holds the weight with both hands and takes off from a short runway for an ancient long jump. The weight is used to further push the jumper by pushing them forward during the jump to increase momentum. This is one of the more difficult events of the ancient pentathlon due to logistics and the absolute power needed to advance the body.
