Nutrition is certainly one of the most overlooked aspects of any triathlon training program. We tend to focus on adjustment rather than fully optimizing our training. We have all heard the saying of "smart but not hard". So, to some extent, this argument can be applied to your training program. We can say to ourselves: "I consume X calories a day, I can eat what I want when I want it" or "I need to eat less to reduce my activity." In either case, both may be correct, but without the proper structure, these ideas may prevent you from getting the most out of your training.
As a result of your training, you can actually provide a lot of calories to your body during the day. If you are preparing for the Ironman Triathlon, you may burn 2 to 5 kilocalories per day during training. And, yes, you have a lot of room for your intake. However, how, when and how you consume can have an impact on the outcome of the training.
