11 ways to improve thyroid eye disease (TED)

Thyroid eye disease is an inflammatory disease that affects the contents of the eyelids, including the extraocular muscles and eyelid fat. It is almost always associated with Graves' disease [GD] but in Hashimoto's thyroiditis, primary hypothyroidism or thyroid cancer. TED's eye manifestations include soft tissue infections, eyelid retraction, ocular protrusion, corneal exposure, and optic nerve compression. The signs and symptoms of the disease are characteristic. These include cover retraction, cover lag, and a delay in the upward shift of the upper eyelid in the TED-specific downward gaze.

Thyroid eye disease affects approximately 1 million people in the United States and Canada and 250,000 in the United Kingdom. Although blindness is a terrible complication, fortunately, only a few patients need surgery or other medical care to protect their vision. However, most patients with thyroid eye disease seem to be silently trying to accept facial defects caused by the disease. It is particularly unfriendly, distorting the face, the most expressive, vivid and timeless features of the eye.

Many people with thyroid eye disease can't face the world, they don't want to look in the mirror again, and avoid social contact as much as possible. The relationship is broken, employment opportunities are reduced, depression is in trouble, and life is getting worse. These people are really desperate, they have lost a hope of always improving, and the consequences of their daily lives are also very serious.

In the past few years, significant advances have been made in the medical and surgical treatment of thyroid eye disease. However, the psychological and social aspects of the disease have been largely ignored. Recent studies have shown that patients with moderate to severe Graves' eye disease have significant mood disorders, especially when they are disfigured.

Now available for a day of treatment for thyroid disease, the eyes are protruding, and the symptoms of binocular vision and eyeball can be summarized as follows:

  1. Cold on your eyes
  2. Raise the head to knot the swelling
  3. Linseed oil
  4. Lubricate eye drops [avoid red eye treatment]
  5. Lubricating oil paste
  6. Practice strengthening eye muscles
  7. Humidifier in your room
  8. Wear good sunglasses that really protect your eyes
  9. Corrective surgery to loosen the eyelids
  10. Decompression surgery
  11. Steroids and Prisms [correcting double vision]

There are many reports showing that linseed oil can help your TED, and you can see the results in 1 or 2 weeks, especially if you have mild TED symptoms.

In addition, different eye movements can be used to help treat eye symptoms – most of which are very easy to implement and do not require any special settings.

Some studies have shown that after radioactive iodine therapy [RAI], your eyes will get worse in 90% of cases, especially if the patient does not give any steroid tablets – prednisolone before and after radioactive iodine treatment. Keep in mind that eye problems can occur both during and after diagnosis and treatment of thyroid problems.
