Hawaii Scuba Diving: Pearl Harbor

Pearl Harbor is not the first destination that most divers think of when they want to dive in Hawaii. Hanauma Bay, Kaneohe Bay, Maui or Molokai are very famous and very popular.

The Pearl Harbor Sea Wall is the best tropical dive. This is a relaxing and enjoyable dive. You can snorkel on the ground, or SCUBA to dive to 60 feet. This is a good dive for beginners.

The real attraction of Pearl Harbor to me is the historical wreckage of the Japanese Navy’s Second World War.

I was fortunate to spend a few months in Oahu in 1983. I attended the Naval SCUBA School there.

Although I spent a lot of time in the water during my school, I didn't see much. We did most of the training in the lock of the submarine base. The water is dark, the surface is greasy, there is sewage and Arizona oil leaks.

In fact, when we left the water, we had to scrub our own oil with comet powder.

The real enjoyment for me is when I get off work…
