What is an antioxidant?
Antioxidants are substances that protect cells from damage caused by unstable molecules called free radicals. Free radicals come from a variety of sources, such as air pollutants and cigarette smoke. Examples of antioxidants include vitamin C, vitamin E, vitamin A, beta-carotene, selenium and lycopene.
These antioxidants are found in many vegetables, fruits and grains. If you feel that you don't get the recommended daily amount of antioxidants, then it is beneficial to supplement the multivitamins, but never rely on supplements to meet all your antioxidant needs because there are no suitable alternatives.
