Archaeologists have long used teeth to reveal information about lifestyles, causes of death, and ancient civilizations. However, a recent study by the Daily Mail showed that teeth can also provide us with information about the future. The researchers found that teeth can predict children's susceptibility to mental illness such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, anxiety and depression.
A careful examination of the deciduous teeth of a 6-year-old child found that children with thin enamel may have problems with inattention. Lead author, Dr. Erin Dunn, a psychiatrist at the Massachusetts General Hospital, said that although such findings may be commonplace for archaeologists, it is unusual in psychiatry because it is screening for mental illness. The new prospects have opened the door and are on the rise.
Differences in size and tooth quality better predict mental health
Dr. Dunn said that this is something they have never seen or thought about before. Her team consists of anthropologists, public health practitioners and archaeologists who work at the American Association for the Advancement of Science [AAA] in Washington.
The researchers asked 37 parents in California to donate the teeth of a 6-year-old child when they fell. Use high resolution imaging to examine each tooth. This analysis was later inferred to study the child's behavior. Differences in tooth quality and dimensions were found to be better predictors of mental health than other biomarkers that psychiatrists usually look for.
Cross-disciplinary scientists need to work together
Dr. Dunn believes that collaboration among scientists across disciplines is very important because it adds more dimensions to research. She adds that scientists tend to isolate and work with people from the same field. For example, psychiatrists only work with psychiatrists, and psychologists only work with psychologists. People usually do not explore other relevant aspects across disciplines or in research.
Dr. Dunn said the study proved that more interdisciplinary science is needed and how to make more opportunities to provide people with different perspectives on things, which may be completely unexpected.
Warning signs for adolescents and adolescents with mental illness
Sometimes it is difficult to judge whether a child or adolescent's behavior is a normal part of the growth process or something else. If the symptoms persist for weeks or months, you will need to visit a health care professional. Some warning signs for mental illness are:
-
Always feel very anxious and worried
-
Get angry and become irritable
-
Frequent headaches, stomachaches and other unexplained pain
-
Frequently doing nightmares
-
Low or no energy
-
Avoid friends
-
Smoking, drinking or taking drugs
-
Engage in self-harm and other dangerous behaviors
-
Lost interest in things I liked before
-
Have trouble in school or sports
Road to recovery
Good mental health is very important to the overall health of children and adolescents, because these are the ages at which they grow up and they shape the child's future personality. For many adults experiencing mental health problems, the symptoms persist as they grow but are not diagnosed or ignored. Therefore, it is important to detect mental illness early and receive a timely diagnosis.
