Pole hopping is a high jump variant that allows competitors to achieve higher heights by using fiberglass or carbon fiber rods. This flexible rod replaces the early solid rod because it allows for a higher height. Pole Vaulting is part of the ancient Greek, Cretan and Celtic competitions and has been a major part of the men's Olympics since 1896, but it was not until 2000 that it entered the women's competition.

Like almost all ancient events, the cause of the challenge is military. The Poles were used to remove natural obstacles throughout Europe. In those days, the distance of the vault was measured, not the height. In the area around the North Sea, very ordinary people and soldiers use the poles to cross the marshes and still hold long jump competitions.
