Wingfield named the game "Sphairistike", which means "playing." In this game, he combined the ideas of the old game, such as the stadium, squash and badminton. Tennis is also a popular sport for European monks.
The first organized tennis tournament was held in England in 1874 at the English Ryukyu Club in Wimbledon. News about the game reached the United States, and the first American National Championship was held in Newport in 1881. However, the game is limited to men for a while. Just six years later, women made their debut in the 1887 Women's Championship.
