Reduce childhood obesity through home cooking

If you are a parent or plan to become a parent, you can't help but pay attention to the childhood obesity crisis. According to the website of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, childhood obesity has doubled in the past three decades; for teenagers, it has quadrupled. In fact, this means that more than one-third of children and adolescents are overweight or obese. These are all terrible statistics.

If you want to prevent your child from becoming obese or overweight, an effective way is to make more meals at home.

Cooking to lose weight:

It is recommended that doing more food for children can help them lose weight, which seems counterproductive. After all, most weight loss programs are about limiting food, right? Well, this is not always the case.

In order to combat childhood obesity, it is helpful to understand that it is usually caused by children eating too much processed "fast food" [high calorie, low nutrition] and inadequate health food. Instead of most highly processed fast foods, we provide our children with nutritious home-cooked meals and snacks to help them lose weight or maintain a healthy weight. After all, it is often referred to as "junk" food.

Healthy food movement:

In 2010, First Lady Michelle Obama began the “Let's Move” campaign to help children get back to health. The program includes exercise, but it also focuses on healthy food at home and school. Her show is still very strong today. In fact, she recently spoke at a health summit to educate people about all the benefits of home cooking.

Direct benefits of home cooking

When you think about it, the direct benefits of home cooking to your child are obvious. The most important thing is that you can control what your child eats – you can choose fresh, nutritious ingredients and limit the amount of unhealthy additives. Strictly processed foods prepared outside the home usually contain sugar, salt, non-speaking additives, synthetic flavors and unhealthy carbohydrates and fats.

As a parent, you will also notice another direct benefit of combating childhood obesity with home cooking – you can save a lot of money! Restaurant meals and pre-packaged foods you buy at the store are very expensive. Think about it – if a packaged food can cost a few dollars to feed a family of four – what is the quality of the ingredients? In order to keep prices low, the quality of the raw materials used may have been affected.

Long-term benefits of home cooking:

Provide you and your child with the long-term benefits of home cooking. By cooking at home, especially if you involve your child, you will teach them healthy cooking and baking habits that may continue during their childhood and adulthood.

In fact, the University of Alberta conducted a study that found that children who helped to cook at home were 10% more likely to eat vegetables than those who did not. Everything helps when the children eat vegetables.

Finding time to cook for your child can be a challenge. With some skilled knowledge, some exercises and the right tools, you will soon be able to build a healthy eating environment at home. Don't forget that not only will children benefit – you will also improve your eating habits.
