5 ways to stay motivated during physical therapy

After an injury or surgery, you will usually find that your mobility is limited, or that your functional strength and mobility are less than before the event. Often in these situations, your general practitioner will develop physical therapy to help you relearn the correct exercise pattern and restore your strength, flexibility, range of motion, endurance and general body independence.

When you face your first physical or occupational treatment, you may experience tension or excitement as this will be your new experience. However, you will soon know that treatment courses often involve a lot of hard physical work. The procedures, treatments, and exercises you receive during treatment can be laborious and sometimes even mildly painful. Here are five tips for staying motivated to complete treatment.

1. Understanding motivation

Motivation is a complex subject, but in short, everyone's motivation is based on their genetic, social and cultural background. While some things may motivate you, they may not necessarily motivate others. It is important to understand clearly why you should receive treatment. Do you want to restore your mobility and regain independence? Do you want to fix your knees and return to your favorite sport? Focus on what you want from treatment and set the image as your ultimate goal.

2. Find the right therapist

One of the most important factors for your success will be your relationship with the physiotherapist. While it's important to know that they have the right education, licenses, and qualifications, you should also feel their bedside style. Will they encourage and inspire you? Do you think there is a positive connection with this person? If someone doesn't seem to be right for you, feel free to continue interviewing other physiotherapists.

3. Monitor and track your data

Your first meeting with a physiotherapist may include a preliminary assessment, they will study your condition and make multiple measurements of the strength and activity of the affected area. Your therapist should explain to you the details of these measurements for your condition and what your goals for each measurement should be. Let your therapist get you involved in tracking progress by giving you a copy of the results after each course. This alone can create a miracle for your motivation.

4. Find a partner

Often, when you receive treatment, you will meet someone else who is similar to your own condition or treatment plan. When this happens, it may be helpful to open a conversation and establish a relationship with this person. Even if you just shoot each other by email or text every day, see how the situation develops and provides motivation, it will make you responsible for the treatment process, and encourage you to work hard.

5. Inspire yourself with music

Anyone who has ever exercised knows that listening to music can help you stay motivated and solve pain when exercise becomes difficult. Feel free to talk about bringing your music and headphones to your conversation with the therapist.
