Track and Field System Approach (Part 2)

Now that we have considered some general considerations for establishing an annual track and field training program, let us be more specific and break the year into the progress of the training cycle. We will use a three-phase plan for our general purpose, post-match, pre-match and competition phases. These stages can also be broken down into more specific sub-stages, but for now let us summarize them for the sake of simplicity. For high school track and field athletes, the outdoor competition season usually runs from mid-March to late May or early June, including district, conference and state championships. For athletes starting from the winter sports season, there may be only a few weeks of rest before the start of the track and field exercise.

These athletes should be monitored for excessive use of stress and injury. In addition, athletes who have not trained before the start of the season will find themselves in just a few weeks to prepare for the outdoor track…
