Will the spider give you creeps?
Will height make you tremble on your knees?
Will flying make you circuit?
"Okay," you said, "Sufficient old people often talk jokes!" [If you have a phobia with your feet, please apologize]. Let's take a look at it:
When encountering certain situations, activities, animals or people, you will find:
- When does your rational thinking process get out of the woods?
- You have to do something [such as running away, jumping into the air or screaming], in other words, are you limited in behavior/choice when you face stimulation?
- Is it stealing, killing and destroying your life instead of strengthening it?
- Will it bring you fear immediately?
If your answer to the above is yes, then you may experience phobia. This is obviously not a medical definition, but a general rule of thumb.
So what is the Bible's evaluation of them?
Although I don't specifically mention phobia in the Bible I know, there are some clues that we wisely follow:
1 John 4:18
There is no fear in love. But perfect love will dispel fear, because fear is related to punishment. A scared person is not perfect in love.
The irrational fear is not God. It shows a mental error that should not exist, but somehow. For phobias, the fundamental fear is often based on wisdom – we should be alert to high, dangerous spiders or snakes. But our actual response is irrational or sensible – it is not under our control, I believe that this is not what God wants us to be.
Romans 12:2
No longer fit the pattern of the world, but change by updating your mind.
2 Corinthians 10:5
Every thought must be captured and made to obey Christ.
Both verses encourage us to be proactive and take the initiative in our ideological life. This is the direction I want to explore here because I believe there is a cure…
my story
For 25 years, I have had phobias on spiders. I remember when I started this phobia when I was 9 years old, when I crossed a big spider web in a swamp in Florida [about how I got there, this is another story!]. I got into a panic and tried to make this thick sticky net from my face and hair – I always wondered where the spider is!
Fast forward for 20 years, I can vividly recall trying to expel a spider from the bathtub with a card and a cup. When I lean forward, sweat will form on my forehead, hoping that the spider will not make bolts for it. This is a long and tense process for me. When I lie down and sleep, if there is a spider on the ceiling, I can't settle down – what if it falls? What if it landed on me? in case …? Of course, the only thing worse than seeing the spider on the ceiling is to open your eyes again instead of seeing it there! where are you now? I jumped out of bed and started a full search. Do you know how much this phobia ruined my life?
I have been a Christian for a while, and I never thought about asking God to heal me from my phobia. Not that I don't believe he can do it, I know he can, but I don't want to waste his time.
However, knowing what I know now, I have other ideas for this treatment. When we broke our limbs, we went to the hospital to make a casting to help our bones repair. When we got the incision, we knew we had to clean the wound and cover it to protect it. I believe that God has revealed to us a way to correct phobia. Of course, God can heal the bones immediately, or cut or even raise someone from the dead – I don't doubt – but mainly he lets us continue to use it, learn from it and move on. I think this is the same as phobia.
how about it?
Pastor Gregory Boyd explores an interesting parallel relationship with the movie "Matrix" in his book "Escaping the Matrix" and accuses the wrong store A phobia formed during a particular memory. This may be something that others have actually experienced or observed.
In his book, he used an adaptation of Fast Phobia Cure [Dr. Richard Bolstad and Dr. Margot Hamblett], which I was introduced as a practitioner of Neurological Programming [NLP]. This direct exercise takes about an hour and has a powerful effect in many phobia patients. What I like about it is that it makes a lot of sense, teaching the brain to remember events that were not stressful in the past. It also does not use hypnosis, it has no pain, and can even be done by phone!
About 5 years ago, I was cured by the phobia of spiders! When the bathroom scene unfolds, I usually pick it up and escort the promise – when I remember the pain it once brought to me, it actually smiled at myself.
Once limited by my phobia, the irony is that I now find myself motivated by it, hoping everyone knows that there is a way out, a solution.
The first obstacle is to start a ministry! How is the sense of humor!
Summary
For many people, phobia is a painful reality. They hinder behavior and prevent people from doing what they like to do because they are irrational but consume fear. The Bible encourages us to believe in hope, and I believe that rapid phobia treatment is an example. I personally experienced it and guided many others through it and found it to be effective. For me, follow Paul's teachings and capture every thought to obey Christ.
